Where to Start: Kickstart Your Decluttering Journey
Decluttering your living space can seem like an overwhelming task, but it's also an incredibly rewarding experience that can bring peace and clarity to your life. If you're feeling overwhelmed by the clutter, here are some steps you can take to get started:
Create a Plan of Attack
Before you begin, take some time to think about what you want to achieve. Having a clear goal in mind can help you stay motivated and focused throughout the process. Ask yourself:
What is your goal for decluttering?
Are you trying to create more space in your home?
Do you want to simplify your life and reduce stress?
Write down a rough action plan. It doesn't need to be detailed; just enough to guide you and get you started.
Choose a Decluttering Method
Option One: The Area That Bothers You the Most
Identify the area in your home that causes you the greatest stress. Is it your overflowing wardrobe? Or your kitchen surfaces covered in clutter? Start with the area that is causing you the most stress. This can give you a sense of accomplishment and motivate you to continue.
Option Two: High-Traffic Areas
Focus on high-traffic areas such as entryways, living rooms, and kitchens. These spaces tend to accumulate clutter quickly and impact your mood and productivity.
Option Three: Follow a Specific Plan or Method
There are many decluttering methods to choose from, such as the KonMari method or the four-box method. Select one that resonates with you and follow it step-by-step. You can also find numerous social media accounts that run regular decluttering challenges—pick one and follow along.
Option Four: Room by Room
Use a decluttering checklist (available to download from our resources page). Pick a place to start and work through the list in any order you like. Move systematically through your home, completely finishing one area before starting another. This approach can help you see your progress and stay motivated.
For example, you might start with the bathroom and main bedroom, as these are spaces where you start and end your day, making a positive impact on your daily flow and mood. This method works well for many of our clients, but the order is entirely up to you. Everyone’s home and decluttering needs are different, so find the pace and style that suits you.
Begin with a Small Area
If you're feeling overwhelmed, start with a small area, such as a drawer, shelf, or small corner of a room, or even one category of items. Decluttering a small area can help you build momentum and make it easier to tackle larger areas later on.
Sort Your Items into Piles
As you go through your belongings, sort them into piles: keep, donate, sell, and rubbish/recycle. Be honest with yourself about what you really need and use. If you haven't used something in over a year, consider getting rid of it.
Take Action on the Piles
Once you have sorted your items, take action on each pile:
Keep: Put away the things you want to keep.
Donate/Sell: Move items you no longer need but are still in good condition.
Dispose: Recycle or throw away anything that is no longer useful.
Develop a Routine
Make decluttering part of your regular routine. Schedule decluttering sessions and set aside time each week to go through a small area of your home. Whether it’s a few minutes each day, a couple of hours on the weekend, or a day each month, having a dedicated decluttering session can help you make progress and stay motivated. By making it a habit, you'll be able to maintain a clutter-free space.
Celebrate Small Victories
Remember, decluttering is a process and it takes time, but it's worth it. Don't be too hard on yourself, and celebrate small victories along the way. The most important thing is to start somewhere.
